TEHRAN – The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) deputy director has announced that Iran is now self-sufficient in production of medical radioisotopes.
“We have reached the final stage in the production of medical radioisotopes… and now there is no need for importation of medical radioisotopes,” Mohammad Qannadi said on Sunday. He also said that the project to produce industrial isotopes is already well underway. “Hopefully we will also attain self-sufficiency in this field within the next few years through the tireless efforts of the Iranian experts.”
The official described as “matchless” Iran’s scientific progress, saying the nuclear achievements are result of scientists’ efforts that have turned the threats posed by the sanctions into opportunity.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Qannadi said that Iran has already gained access to the complete nuclear fuel cycle.
Radioisotope is a radioactive isotope which is used in physical and biological researches and therapeutics.
The radioisotopes which are produced in Iran are mainly used for diagnosis and treatment of various cancers or are used to alleviate cancer-related pains.
In December 2010, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad officially unveiled five national radioisotope-production plans. In January and February, four domestically produced radioisotopes were unveiled.
